Background
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a leading international independent medical humanitarian organisation, dedicated to providing expert medical relief to vulnerable populations at times of conflict or disaster. In over 71 countries worldwide, MSF provides both life-saving emergency relief and longer-term assistance to make basic healthcare services available to the most vulnerable or excluded communities. MSF Nederland in Italy coordinates the Search and Rescue operations in the central Mediterranean which provide lifesaving activities and basic assistance operating with the Oyvon ship.
Scope and objectives of the position
Plan, coordinate and monitor all logistics related activities in the project area including all non-medical assistance related activities (Ship, food, water hygiene-sanitation and essential non-food items) in order to ensure an optimal running of the project.
Main responsibilities
- Ensure proper Order Processing in the project.
- Ensure good functioning of vehicle fleet and other engines.
- Ensure maintenance of all technical equipment.
- Organise transport of goods.
- Guarantee means of communication.
- Implement all administrative related activities linked to logistics (orders, insurances, vehicle contracts, etc.).
- Ensure installation and maintenance of functional office space(s) and lodging facilities for international staff in adequate living conditions
Specific Accountabilities
This position is based in Licata, Sicily, home port of Oyvon, MSF Search and Rescue boat.
The logashore supports the SAR project on their activities in the boat and onshore, to ensure the smooth running of operations.
The position can occasionally require some times on board (during performing of SAR rotations), in order to understand how to better support the team. Especially in periods of peak activities, it is likely that work on weekends will deem necessary.
Vessel logistics
- Collaborate with maritime crew, HR-Admin team, and Supply Manager for the efficient organization and running of the ship’s port calls, so that the ship is ready to sail out again as quickly as possible.
- Support with cleaning and re-supply of the vessel at the end of each rotation
- Support ordering process, purchases and deliveries to the vessel
- Support with stock counts
- In collaboration with the skipper, support the SAR project in the maintenance of their equipment (including the RHIB)
- Receive job requests from the team on board, provide inputs, and identify technicians who can carry out maintenance jobs on board
- Perform basic hands-on maintenance and repair jobs onboard, specifically on routine technical logistics families (including but not limited to cold chain, biomed, health facility management, and shelter maintenance).
Base logistics:
- Collaborate with the HR-Admin team for the management of guesthouses and office in Licata.
- Fleet management (a car and a van)
General
- Back-up user for Unifield.
- Together with the Logistics Coordinator, Project Coordinator and finance department, participate in the project planning and definition of the budget.
- Act as a back-up for the Supply Manager, support with supply tasks or any other task as requested by the line manager and operational needs.
- Support the Information System Specialist in performing their ICT duties.
- Ensure the regular reporting.
- Any other duties as assigned by Project Coordinator or Logistics Coordinator.
Profile and qualifications Education
- Essential, secondary education and technical diploma or technical university degree, preferably as an engineer.
- Technical skills in mechanics is an asset
Experience
- Essential, 2 years of previous working experience in logistics activities related jobs.
- Desirable: previous experience in MSF or other NGOs
- Required at least one of the below: Previous maritime experience, OR Hands on maintenance and construction skills.
Languages
- Required: English and Italian C1

Conditions
Contract: Fixed term contract (12 months), full-time. Level 2 of Italian CCNL of Commerce.
Candidates should hold a work permit to work in Italy.
Gross Annual Salary: Between 35.420 Euros and 38.248 Euros, depending on the MSF experience of the selected candidate.
Duty Station: Licata (Sicily).
