Cultural Mediator
Base: Italy – Rome

Contract: Part time (Fixed term contract) 3 months contract (1 month of trial period) extensible to 1 year

 

I. CONTEXT OF THE MISSION
Médecins du Monde (MdM) is an international humanitarian organisation whose mission is to provide medical care for the most vulnerable populations, the world over, including France. It seeks to stimulate voluntary commitment from doctors, other health care providers, and from those whose expertise in other fields is needed for its activities, to enlist all competent support required for the achievement of its projects, and to seek at all times to encourage close working relationships with populations in its care. The goal of MdM F is to intervene in the Mediterranean Sea throughout a humanitarian action including a “ground” and “sea” intervention as well as an advocacy dimension.

MdM is working in Italy since the end of 2015 with a health and psychosocial programme for migrants arrived in Calabria (with a focus on unaccompanied migrants and women). MdM is now in the process of scaling up its action in Italy by opening a programme in Rome addressing the needs of migrants, with special regards to migrants living in informal settlements (including occupied buildings). The objective of the project is to improve access to healthcare for migrants living in informal camps and occupied houses, supporting the provision of MHPSS and SRH services and facilitating access to public health system.

 

II. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Under the direct supervision of the project manager, give support to the team (medical and psychosocial) with linguistic and cultural mediation, during activities in the informal settlements and in referral facilities.

 

III. Human Resources of the project
The team is composed by:
A general coordination (General Coordinator, Medical Coordinator, Administrative and Logistic coordinator, Advocacy manager)
Project manager
Psychologist
Social worker
Several cultural mediators

 

IV. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Contribute to the building of MdM visibility and acceptance by creating link with the communities
Provide MdM project with an understanding of the local, socio-cultural determinants through the knowledge of the beneficiaries’ cultures and a reading capability of the context in which he/she should operate
linguistic and cultural mediation to all required activities within the project;
accompaniment of patients in referral public health facilities;
cooperate with the staff in the organization of health education sessions;
support the relations with public and private social services (health registry, registry office, services dedicated to migrants);
collect the datas of the project in a proper manner and present internal reports;

 

V. PROFILE
Italian and Tigrinya, Somali, Amharic or Arabic is mandatory
Minimum 3 years of professional experience in social health or with organizations (public or private) that deal with migrants
Diploma or Training in Intercultural Mediation is an asset
English and/or French is a plus

 

VI. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to classify and to manage priorities
Good attitude to work in multidisciplinary teams;
Habit to work and solve problems in contexts with high levels of stress;
Flexibility
Great ability to adapt to the community life of the team, even in situations of comfort reduced;
Basic Knowledge of Windows (i.e. Word, Excel, Power Point)
You are committed to MdM’s values as an organization and motivated by its non-statutory, NFP model.
