Founded in 1950, Doctors with Africa CUAMM was the first NGO focused on healthcare to be recognized by the Italian government. It is now one of the leading organizations working to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The NGO promotes long-term health cooperation projects, intervening also in emergencies to ensure that services are available to all.

Doctors with Africa CUAMM is currently active in 11 Sub-Saharan countries: Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.

The NGO supports public and non-profit hospitals, local districts, schools of nursing and midwifery, university faculties of medicine.

CUAMM’s action focuses on health system strengthening and targets the weakest population groups, particularly women and children. Interventions include prevention, screening and treatment programmes; development or strengthening of referral systems at community level; training of health staff; management support and technical assistance to local health institutions; field research.

CUAMM's international and national staff work together on the front line to strengthen local health systems, in resource-limited contexts where the commitment and contribution of the individual can make a real difference.

Job position: Nurse 

Location: Abidjan/Songon, Ivory Coast

Purpose of the role

Within the framework of the project “SONGON: Driving Community Value Through Integrated Care - AID 013526”, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented in collaboration with an Italian lead partner and local partners, the Nurse is tasked with strengthening the clinical and caregiving competencies of the nursing staff.

Key duties and responsibilities:

• Providing continuous training on the job to nursing staff to enhance their clinical and bedside caregiving skills.
• Supervising daily nursing practices, patient care activities, and routine ward procedures to ensure quality standards.
• Mentoring and coaching nursing personnel directly in clinical settings, facilitating practical skill transfer and problem-solving.
• Assessing clinical competencies to identify specific training needs and skill gaps.
• Implementing bedside clinical protocols, hygiene standards, and patient safety guidelines alongside the nursing team.
• Monitoring nursing care plan execution and giving constructive feedback to staff during daily duties.
• Conducting practical clinical demonstrations and hands-on case reviews during shift handovers or bedside rounds.
• Collaborating with the medical team and clinical supervisors to align nursing practices with overall healthcare objectives.
• Contributing to formal training content, including delivering lectures 
• Serving as the primary health technical focal point, directly supporting the Project Manager with expert guidance, technical oversight, and strategic project implementation.
• Managing and fostering key relationships with hospital staff, healthcare management, and relevant authorities to ensure seamless communication and operational alignment. 
• Providing technical support to the Project Manager within the health sector 

Requirements

• University Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 3–5 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably with demonstrated experience in clinical supervision, mentoring, or on-the-job training.
• Strong practical skills in patient care, hygiene management, and clinical procedures.
• Previous hospital experience in fragile or low income countries; previous experience in African context represents a strong asset
• Good knowledge of French and Italian, essential for communicating with local and Italian stakeholders
• Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and cross-cultural communication skills
• Adaptability, patience, and a hands-on approach to capacity building.

Other information

TERMS OF CONTRACT

Type of contract: collaboration contract

Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the position, with possible increase based on professional experience)

Rest days: 2.5 days for each month of work 

Flight ticket: one return flight 

Medical provisions:  the NGO provides health insurance and covers vaccination costs

Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa and work/residence permits

Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it can be individual or shared, depending on the logistical situation, the availability at the workplace and the available budget.

Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker
