Founded in 1950, Doctors with Africa CUAMM was the first NGO focused on healthcare to be recognized by the Italian government. It is now one of the leading organization working to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The NGO promotes long-term health cooperation projects, intervening also in emergencies to ensure that services are available to all.

Doctors with Africa CUAMM is currently active in 9 Sub-Saharan countries: Angola, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.

The NGO supports public and non-profit hospitals, local districts, schools of nursing and midwifery, university faculties of medicine.

CUAMM’s action focuses on health system strengthening and targets the weakest population groups, particularly women and children. Interventions include prevention, screening and treatment programmes; development or strengthening of referral systems at community level; training of health staff; management support and technical assistance to local health institutions; field research.

CUAMM's international and national staff work together on the front line to strengthen local health systems, in resource-limited contexts where the commitment and contribution of the individual can make a real difference.

Job position: MHPSS/GBV Capacity Building Specialist

Location: Debere Berahan, Amhara Regional State, North Shoa Zone, Ethiopia.

Duration: 2 months

Purpose of the role

As part of a project aimed at ensuring access to health services in the Amhara region, the MHPSS/GBV Capacity Building Specialist will ensure the quality of the activities related to MHPSS and GBV and will support the staff in the overall coordination and planning of project activities

Key duties
  • Technical support and on the job coaching to the project staff in utilizing the computerized EMR system ensuring data quality, completeness, and correct utilization for MHNT (Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams) activities
  • Facilitate the collection, analysis and use of data regarding GBV and Mental health within the community target of the project
  • Play a vital role in training and capacitating the Project team, Healthcare staff and local authorities on recognizing and responding to GBV and Mental health related issues, with particular attention on contents of trainings, methodologies and HEWs’ community activities
  • Supervise and support the quality of MCH/GBV/MHPSS services provided by the MHNTs and Health facilities in the project target areas, proposing corrective actions and quality improvement measures where needed
  • Participate - together with the project team - in the supervision and monitoring visits to peripheral health facilities
  • Contribute to the identification and contextualization of appropriate MHPSS approaches for IDPs and host communities, in line with existing national guidelines and ongoing humanitarian interventions in Ethiopia
  • Monitor the level of achievement of project targets, tracking progress and performance indicators
  • Assesses the operational modalities of ongoing projects and proposes possible adjustments,
  • Contributes to the evaluation of relevant project staff, in coordination with the Project Manager - verifying the consistency between assigned tasks and respective job description - limited to the MHPSS/GBV and protection-related roles under her/his technical supervision.
  • Evaluate the project performance and quality of service delivery identifying gaps and recommending actions for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • University Degree in in psychology, social sciences or humanities
  • Previous experience in the field of GBV or MHPSS in low income countries; experience in development cooperation projects and/or African context will be considered an asset
  • Good knowledge of English
  • Adaptability to work and live in an unstable area

TERMS OF CONTRACT

Type of contract: collaboration contract

Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the job position, with possible increase based on professional experience and rural area hardship allowance)

Flight ticket: one return flight at the beginning and end of the collaboration

Health issues: the NGO provides health insurance and covers vaccination costs

Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa and work/residence permits

Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it is generally individual, depending on the logistical situation and the availability of accommodation in the workplace

Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker
